Don't have much else to say really, these guys do what they do, and do it well, pretty underrated band as well, so give um a listen.

For fans of old school death metal ie Scream Bloody Gore era Death.

Some of you I am sure are familiar with the screamo sound of the early 90s, bands like Orchid, Angel Hair, Heroin etc. Well this band was the precursor to them all.

Alas, they were around very briefly and only released this one LP however despite this, they influenced the better part of an entire genre.

So if you like Orchid, and your screamo dark, loud and pissed off, you'll feel right at home here. Well worth a listen for screamo fans, hell, even you crust punk fans could like this especially if you like the darker bands.

Susumu Hirasawa - Siren

For those not familiar with Susumu Hirasawa, I made a post about him last year or so, back when his new album Planet Roll Call came out. The basic gist of which is that he is responsible for a great many of things, and has been at the forefront of the Japanese electronic music scene.

This is one of his older albums, from back in 1996, and is pretty much a concept album about Thailand of all places. Then again, Thailand has always been a big source of inspiration in a lot of Hirasawa's works.

This is the new album from Envy, it just leaked last night, and it officially comes out tomorrow, so I figured I'd toss this up here.

For those living under a rock, Envy are probably the most well known of all the Japanese screamo bands, and are most well known for their recent incorporation of post-rock into their song structure. This album continues further with that musical direction.

What more can I say, it's Envy, and it's great. Also, they are currently on tour so look into any upcoming tour dates. For you local folks, they are playing Jerky's on the 29th which I'll be attending.

So I saw this duo up at Great Scott on Friday at the Nachtmystium, Dark Castle, Zoroaster, Atlas Moth show, and honestly, I thought they stole the show.

Dark Castle is a two-piece sludge/doom machine that deliver some seriously crushing riffs. Quite unusually also, the guitarist/vocalist is in fact a girl. Got to talk to her a bit after the show, and she is easily one of the nicest people I've ever met. So if this tour happens to come by you, I strongly recommend checking it out, if only for them, course, Nachtmystium are pretty good themselves.



This band is pretty much my newest obsession. I just can't get enough of this stuff, so seriously give it a listen, and like I said, go see them live, won't regret it.

If any of you are familiar with the The World Comes to an End in the End of a Journey compilation, you'll be familiar with Dopamine. Dopamine's track honestly was the best track on it to boot.

But as mentioned at the start of this post, this is some lovely Neigecore. What is Neigecore? It is the term I use to describe the new influx of bands that sound like well, Neige related projects, such as Alcest, and Amesoeurs, and Lantlos, and Mortifera, etc etc. Dopamine is one such similar sounding band, from a rather unusual location, China.

Musically, this is a fairly short 2 song EP with each track roughly 7 min long. Just some nice sounding post-punk influenced black metal that sounds great, and is easy to get into.

This is YAPOOS, one of Jun Togawa's earlier bands. Who is Jun Togawa? I'll let last.fm answer that.

"She began her career in the early 1980s as an unusual idol singer (or possibly a parody of an idol singer). It was soon apparent that her eccentric personality, surreal or disturbing lyrics and multiple wildly different yet highly accomplished singing voices set her apart from the usual bland, cute pop singers so popular in Japan."

I once saw her compared to Nina Hagen, and frankly I see the similarity. Nonethless, this is Yapoos, one of several bands she was in back during the 80s. Musically, expect some great new wave style synth, with some additional quirks accompanied by Jun's vocals and indeed, unusual lyrics. The first track title translates to "Barbara Sexeroid" to give an idea...

Just listened to this album and I fell in love with it. Simply fantastic.

For being a Japanese psychedelic band though, they really don't sound like it. By this I mean of course that they do not follow the more popular trend of Japanese psych such as bands like Les Rallizes Dénudés and the like with their sprawling guitar feedback and noise. These girls are much more along the more conventional understanding of 60s psychedelic rock, and they have got it down to a T.

Give these girls a listen, you won't regret it.

Finally got around to listening to this and this is definitely a hidden gem of this year I'd say. Further, I think this just may be the first time I'm posting a local band on this blog... That's right folks, The Body is a local sludge band out of Providence, R.I. They are playing in a few weeks with Dropdead too at AS220, so for any of you local fucks reading this, you should go make sure you can go to that.

Musically though, this album is some fantastic and crushing sludge. But what really sets this apart... is the choir vocals courtesy of The Assembly of Light Choir in all their magnificent glory, and the additional use of various others instruments such as violas and synths to add to the sound. This is really an album you need to hear for yourself, and experience, even if sludge may not be your thing.

Give this shit a listen.

Anyway, expect more of the same raw, orthodox German black metal fury you should expect. This album is fantastic, and surprisingly "varied" for being raw. Just listen to the last half of So Nail the Hearts.

Anyway, recommended to black metal fans, and of course anyone who liked the previous album I posted by them. Also for reference, this band is on Norma Evangellium Diaboli. That pretty much means you know it's good.

Remember that same super awesome friend that showed me Aluk Todolo? He showed me Menace Ruine also.

Needless to say, this stuff is absolutely wild. While building upon a black metal base, Menace Ruine incorporates swirling noise soundscapes, martial drumming, eerie organs and the implementation of cleanly sung ethereal female vocals rising over the waves of sound to create a sound of beauty. Or well... beauty to me.

Anyway, this is absolutely amazing, and easily one of those must-listen albums of 2010. If you enjoyed Aluk Todolo, you will probably love this.


God, just listen to that... beautiful.

Highly fucking recommended.

Once in a while a friend of mine will give me a small list of albums to listen to, which pretty much always turn out to be mind blowingly good. This is one such album and band.

This is Aluk Todolo, and I can't even begin to describe what this sounds like, so I'll let last.fm do the talking...

"With the goal to create a timeless, organic mix of krautrock’s strangeness and black metal’s coldness, combining Striborg with Faust, Burzum with This Heat, S.V.E.S.T. with Paul Chain, or Ildjarn with Can, Aluk Todolo conjures rabid obsessive rhythms and abyssal disharmonic guitars, subliminal spiritualist vibrations and bizarre, magick summonings. Krautrock. It's a genre I don't know that much about. Oh sure I can name drop a bunch of them, but I have never really given any of them a serious listen. Untill now, and starting with Amon Düül II.

This is Yeti, their 2nd album, released in 1970, and I must say, it is quite good. Musically, this is just a smorgasboard of awesome psychedelic improvisation and the like, with the title track being a lengthy 18 minute improvisation. In fact, a good half of this album is improvisation.

If you enjoyed the Silvester Anfang posted long ago, you should have a small understanding of just what you can expect here, as they were strongly influenced by this.

Recommended to fans of 70s music, psychedelic rock, and Silvester Anfang.

This is Osorezan, Geinoh Yamasahirogumi's first album from back in 1976, and in my opinion, their best behind the Symphonic Suite AKIRA, also simply known as the Akira OST, which I may actually also post eventually.

Musically, this is some heavily experimental music, and features a great deal of vocalists. Roughly 70 as I recall. Further, this is very minimalist. If any of you are familiar with say Nurse With Wound, you should be right at home here. Indeed, Nurse With Wound has sampled this album, in particular on the fantastic Homotopy to Marie track, I Cannot Feel You as the Dogs are Laughing and I am Blind.



Really though, musically this is just far too difficult to describe. It is something you need to hear yourself.

This is Mono In VCF, a relatively new dreampop band from... I don't know. Frankly, I don't know anything about this band, except they play some really sweet dark dreampop. Seriously though, when I first heard this I listened to it three times in a row. It's great stuff. So if you like dreampop, then get on this shit. Hell, even if ya don't like dreampop, or don't know what the fuck dreampop is, you should still get it.

When I listen to new bands, it isn't often I get floored by what I just heard. This is one such case though. Far as I can tell, this band is rather obscure, and this seems to be their only release, much to my sadness. In addition, these tracks were released on a comp of all things to make matters worse. Nonetheless, this band is fantastic, and I'm in love already.

Musically, we have some Japanese hardcore, but what makes this band shine are the vocals. Unlike normal hardcore bands with female vocals, this girl doesn't scream shout, growl, nothing. She sings in a... well, singing fashion. On paper you'd think it'd be awful but it works amazingly. But the real kicker here, is the closing track. Their cover of Christine by Siouxsie and the Banshees. Absolutely gorgeous, and speaking of gorgeous...


Vocalist is pretty gorgeous also I'd say.

So I lied, it isn't actually their entire discography since I'm not posting comps they were featured on or splits, but it's close enough. Also those are best cover art pics I could find... kind of sad.

Needless to say, I fucking love this band, and most likely, you will too.

Muga is easily one of my favorite bands, and also easily my favorite neocrust band. The s/t features female vocals in addition to the male vocals however she is not present on the demo, or the 2nd album. Apparently she killed herself shortly after the 1st album was released resulting in a rather long 4 year break between albums. Really, really unfortunate in my opinion as I thought she added greatly to the 1st album, and sorely missed her in the 2nd. Nonetheless, this is a fucking amazing band. I'd recommend this to anyone and everyone. There's something for everyone.

Unfortunately as mentioned, Paracletus isn't for another 2 months, and there is no known cover art yet so enjoy that lovely invention.

As mentioned, Paracletus should, by all previous accounts, conclude the Trilogy, starting back with SMRC.

What is the Trilogy about exactly? It is an examination of several things. SMRC was about the relationship between God, and Man. Fas, was about Satan's fall, and soon, Paracletus will (if the title is anything to go by, which it often is) be about Jesus, and Heaven. A Trilogy of Man, Satan, and God.

I already wrote a great deal of praise for SMRC in a previous post last year, so I'll go into Fas this time.

Fas is by no means an easy album. It is the only Deathspell Omega piece that I have difficulty in listening to. It is a simply a cacophonous explosion of sound and textures that are simply... not enjoyable to listen to. As another stated to me earlier "It is an album I turn on, then lay down on the cold floor listening to." There is MUCH to Fas, but simply listening to it will not reveal it. Fas is an album that requires your absolute attention, and repeated listening, to hear just how complex and deep this album really is. In my case however, I simply rarely ever have the time to tackle this album. Hopefully you do.

Since on Thursday it was announced that Deathspell Omega will be releasing their final album in their trilogy, the aptly titled "Paracletus", on November 9th, I decided to make a Deathspell Omega post with the rest of their "new" material. That means I won't be posting their first two albums.

Shortly after the release of SMRC was Kénôse, a seeming addendum dealing with the supposed divinity of Jesus. Then came Mass Grave Aesthetics taking a considerably different lyrical subject, this time focusing on a Laurent Tailhade quote, "What do the victims matter, so long as the gesture is beautiful." and delving upon the concept of the aesthetics of violence. Lastly is their newest EP, Chaining the Katechon, a most apocalyptic piece detailing the coming of the Antichrist and that nothing will stop it.

Musically Kénôse bares a strong resemblance to SMRC, while Mass Grave Aesthetics seems more a cross of their old material with the newer style and intelligence of SMRC. Lastly, Chaining the Katechon has an almost sludge and doom sound to it with several slow crushing riffs.

All three are fantastic EPs and well worth a listen though my personal favorites of the 3 are Chaining the Katechon and Mass Grave Aesthetics certainly. Further, it is my hope that the new album will bare resemblance to the sound present on Chaining the Katechon.

Bastard Priest - Under the Hammer of Destruction

Bastard Priest seem to be a relatively new Swedish band but the underground seems ablaze with praise for their demo. Their full-length however just came out and it's just as good as the demo, plus more.

Musically we got old school Swedish death metal with a notably strong crust punk influence. People are already clamoring saying this will become an essential. I don't know if I'd go that far, but this is certainly a fantastic record.

I've included the demo also since well... why not? The demo tracks are on the album, rerecorded, but the demo versions are still nice themselves. Both the album and demo feature a great Bombanfall cover as well.

Cranes - Loved

Once in a while ya come across one of those bands out of nowhere that are simply so damn good that when you show them to people, they also love them. Cranes is one of those bands. I have yet to meet a single person that has not liked Cranes.

What we have here is quite the mishmash of genres. Dreampopy melodies and vocals, with shoegazey guitars and the dark atmosphere of gothic rock, even leaning at times to an almost industrial sound.

When i first heard Cranes, I couldn't decide if I liked it or not. It was frankly quite different from what I listened to at the time, and the vocals were particularly tough to come to a conclusion on. But I fucking love this album, and the female vocals too now, and chances are, you will too.

Originally going by the name of Uriel, they were mainly an English blues/psychedelic band, then changed their name to Egg at the request of their managers and began playing more so progressive rock. They were however eventually given the opportunity to release an all out psychedelic record by another label which they did under the name Arzachel, as due to label restraints they could not use the name Egg. This is the only album they ever recorded as Uriel, or Arzachel.

So what we have here is some great 60s psychedelic rock, that is unfortunately really really underrated. I rarely ever hear anyone mention this record, which is really rather unfortunate as it's fantastic.

Enslave/Realized split

Enslave, not Enslaved


Can't find a cover.

Needless to say this seems to be quite rare, as I only managed to find it through the help of a friend.

So what we have here is a split between two Japanese bands. Enslave, playing that brand of melodic crust with dual male/female vocals I do so love, and Realized, bringing some classic Japanese grindcore.

Both sides are quite good, though I lean more towards the Enslave side, and as mentioned, this is frankly not easy to find, so enjoy everyone. Two great bands for the price of one.

It has become apparent that simply not enough people are familiar with the films of Dario Argento, and as a result, not familiar with Goblin.

Goblin were an old Italian prog band originally under the name of Cherry Five. Eventually, they changed their name to Goblin, and began composing music for movies, in particular, the films of Dario Argento, as well as the Italian Dawn of the Dead, Zombi, and a bunch others I won't get into.

Needless to say, this stuff is amazing. Further, if you have not seen the actual films, I highly recommend them all. Especially Suspiria and Tenebre.

I already made a post on Heaven in Her Arms ohh.... last year, but things have changed up a bit this time. Instead of being pretty much the best band to ever sound like Envy, they have now incorporated a rather heavy sludge influence to their sound, and by heavy, I mean fucking crushing.

When I first heard this I listened to it a grand total of 11 times in 2 days. I don't think I've ever done that... Needless to say, they aren't just Envy worship anymore.
