So I saw this duo up at Great Scott on Friday at the Nachtmystium, Dark Castle, Zoroaster, Atlas Moth show, and honestly, I thought they stole the show.

Dark Castle is a two-piece sludge/doom machine that deliver some seriously crushing riffs. Quite unusually also, the guitarist/vocalist is in fact a girl. Got to talk to her a bit after the show, and she is easily one of the nicest people I've ever met. So if this tour happens to come by you, I strongly recommend checking it out, if only for them, course, Nachtmystium are pretty good themselves.



This band is pretty much my newest obsession. I just can't get enough of this stuff, so seriously give it a listen, and like I said, go see them live, won't regret it.

The Body - All the Waters of the Earth Turn to Blood

Finally got around to listening to this and this is definitely a hidden gem of this year I'd say. Further, I think this just may be the first time I'm posting a local band on this blog... That's right folks, The Body is a local sludge band out of Providence, R.I. They are playing in a few weeks with Dropdead too at AS220, so for any of you local fucks reading this, you should go make sure you can go to that.

Musically though, this album is some fantastic and crushing sludge. But what really sets this apart... is the choir vocals courtesy of The Assembly of Light Choir in all their magnificent glory, and the additional use of various others instruments such as violas and synths to add to the sound. This is really an album you need to hear for yourself, and experience, even if sludge may not be your thing.

Do you like engrish? Do you like Japanese screamo? Then you'll love the newest album by Heaven in Her Arms!

I already made a post on Heaven in Her Arms ohh.... last year, but things have changed up a bit this time. Instead of being pretty much the best band to ever sound like Envy, they have now incorporated a rather heavy sludge influence to their sound, and by heavy, I mean fucking crushing.

When I first heard this I listened to it a grand total of 11 times in 2 days. I don't think I've ever done that... Needless to say, they aren't just Envy worship anymore.

Seriously now. Lets analyze this. The album cover depicts a very old statue that appears religious in nature, likely giving an expression of sadness. Below is album title, Misanthrope(s) and an updside down cross. Who wouldn't think this was anything but black metal?

But nope, this isn't black metal. This is actually a really nice merging of sludge, and, strange as it will sound, screamo. Think of the band Envy, but add in some crushing sludge riffing. To say this album is completely without black metal influence would be a lie though. You can definitely hear some faint black metal influence in here but that is all it is, a faint influence.

Either way though, I highly recommend this for fans of sludge, screamo as well, but will also recomend it for black metal fans since there is some notable black metal influence, and even riffing that can be heard, faint as it is.
